GHEP MPI/DVI Exercise 2 (2017)

Introduction

Continuing with the GHEP interest in the collaborative exercises of missing person identification (MPI) and mass disaster victim identification (DVI), a new exercise has been proposed.

In the present exercise an air crash has been simulated, which involves a known list of victims. In order to avoid an excessive level of data analysis for participants and organizers, an incident involving less than 100 victims has been simulated.

The incident considers the presence of related victims as an additional complexity, a common situation in this type of disasters. Likewise, the simulated crash imposes the need for re-association of fragmented remains.

Apart from aSTR profiles, mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) profiles (control region=CR) are reported as an additional genetic marker for victims identification.

Material

Participants will receive the following documentation:

- Case description

- Excel file containing DNA data (aSTRs and mtDNA) from both human remains and relatives of missing persons (as well as the type of relationship with the victim) and the table of allele frequencies.

- Template form for results and questionnaire.

Participants

Participants must be members of GHEP-ISFG and, only two co-authors per result and per laboratory will be allowed in case there is a scientific publication of the results.

Organizer and contact person
